December 16, 2018 Speaker: Damian Mericka Series: Advent Season 2018

Topic: The Priest -Jesus is Coming (Part 3)

Going deeper questions (Life Group)

  • What stood out to you about this message and why?
  • Have you pondered the humanity of Christ through John 17 before? Have you been homesick before? How challenging was it to focus on move on?
  • Why was there a battle in Genesis 14? Why did Abram get involved? How do we decided when it’s the right time to get involved in something?
  • How could Abrams Tithe be viewed as an act of Intercession? How are you interceding for others?
  • How are we in relationship to Jesus as priests to the High Priest?

Message outline

Title: The Priest -Jesus is Coming (Part 3)

Series: Advent Season 2018

Text: Key Passage- 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

Main Idea: Knowing God as He Knows Us!

  1. A Love Anchored Deeper than the Past (Hebrews 6:13-20)
  • A Messiah who is homesick (John 17:1-5) stays the course to not only return home Himself, but to bring God’s family with Him (Vv.13-26).

  1. The Battle of Nine Kings (Genesis 14:1-16)
  • Four Kings face off against Five in the Valley of Siddim (Vv.1-3)
    • Backstory (In case the reader is curious) Vv.4-9
      • 12 years of peace (servitude)
      • 1 Year of rebellion (tired of serving)
      • 1 Year of Enough of this! (Let’s enslave more)
    • Chedaorlaomer is victorious; the five Kings flee to watch their cities pillaged. (Vv.10-12)
    • “Help us Abram; you’re our only hope!” (v.13)
    • Abram leads a team of 318 men to rescue Lot, while also rescuing & restoring that which was plundered. (Vv.14-16)

III. A High Priest Named Melchizedek (Genesis 14:17-24)

  • The kings who experienced blessing from Abram gather to bless Abram (v.17)
  • The Priest of God most High appears and provides bread and wine (covenant meal) and speaks blessings over Abram who experienced God’s favor (Vv.18-20).
  • Abram provides an intercessory act of giving 10% (9 Kings plus himself) out of the spoils to this Priest (v.20).
    • Note Matthew 5:43-48 & Acts 2:9
  • Abram wants nothing from the other kings; Lot is safe. God is glorified. (Vv.21-24)
    • *Note Genesis 12:2-3

  1. We are Priests under our High Priest, Jesus
  • Jesus, Our High Priest in perfection / standing before God, leads us into that same intimacy (Hebrews 7: 22-28) after the order of Melchizedek, having become the sacrifice for our sin (9:23-28).   We, like Abram serve Him as Priests until He Returns (I Peter 2:9-12)
