Going deeper questions (Life Group)

  • What stood out to you about this message and why?
  • What is the hypostatic union and why is it important?
  • Why did Jesus have to suffer unto death for us? (Read Hebrews 2:9 / Philippians 2:1-11)
  • According to 2 Corinthians 5:16-6:1, what is God’s Grace that Hebrews 2:9 celebrates?
  • Why is suffering a part of our lives today if we are part of God’s family in Christ? (Read John 15:18-27)
  • How do we suffer today in our context? Five ways not to suffer: 1) Deny Jesus’ divinity 2) Don’t tell others they need Jesus. 3)Accept the World’s Morals. 4) Laugh and smile at jokes when Christ is dishonored. 5) Ignore ours and other’s sin.

Message outline

Title: Are We Ashamed of Jesus?

Series: Hebrews: Humanity’s Only Hope

Text: Key Passage-> Hebrews 2:9-12

Main Idea: Salvation is an invitation to suffer with our Savior!

  1. The Humanity of Jesus (Hebrews 2:9)
  • Hypostatic Union- Jesus is always both fully human and fully This is how He can save us and lead us for His Glory!
    • In His Humanity Jesus experienced:
      • Humility: Made lower than the Angels (v.9)
      • Suffering: Obedient to death
        • See -> Philippians 2:1-11
      • In His Humanity Jesus accomplished:
        • Crowned with Glory & Honor
        • Grace: tasted death for everyone
          • See -> 2 Corinthians 5:16-6:1

  1. The Suffering of Jesus (Hebrews 2:10-11)
  • Fitting because: Man was created in the Image of God (imago Dei); Christ took on the image homini- He become (born) a man. (Creator / Redeemer)
  • The Salvation Jesus offers was founded through suffering. We share in His suffering if we accept His Salvation.
    • See -> John 15:18-27

III. Jesus is NOT Ashamed of Us (Hebrews 2:12)

  • Jesus, in His Humanity, arises from among us and we share in celebrating His exaltation!
    • See -> Psalm 22

The Hebrews audience felt God had abandoned them to their suffering.  Their Pastor reminds them that Jesus entered His Creation through suffering and saved them- leading them into His Glory.  Let us not be ashamed nor abandon Him when suffering happens but endure in His Strength for His Glory!

Our present suffering presents the Grace of God to a world of people who still need Him!
