God’s Purpose Through Trials

February 10, 2019 Speaker: Damian Mericka Series: Humanity’s Only Hope

Topic: God’s Purpose Through Trials

Going deeper questions (Life Group)

  • What stood out to you about this message and why?
  • What is the difference between a servant and Son as seen between Moses and Jesus?
  • Why is Moses held so highly in Judaism? Does true Judaism point to Jesus? (Note: John 5:46-47 / Acts 7:37)
  • What does it mean to harden our hearts? Can believers have hardened hearts? Share a time you experienced this? How did you discover this and what did you do about it?
  • What does God seek to accomplish within our lives through testing (See 1 Corinthians 10:9-13)? What does it mean to put God to the test? (See Romans 6:1-4; 12-19)

Message outline

Title: God’s Purpose Through Trials

Series: Hebrews: Humanity’s Only Hope

Text: Key Passage-> Hebrews 3:1-19

Main Idea: Faithfulness does not earn, but confirms our Salvation

  1. The Divine Architect (Hebrews 3:1-6)
  • The difference between a Servant and Son
    • Note Genesis 15:1-6
      • Moses was a faithful Servant who pointed to Jesus
        • Note John 5:46-47
      • Jesus was the faithful Son, worthy of more glory
    • Holding Fast does not mean that we will become a part of God’s House; it shows / proves that we already are. (v.6)

  1. Second Warning: Learn from the Past (3:7-11 / Psalm 95)
  • The Holy Spirit warns us not to harden our hearts during times of testing (Vv.7-9)
    • Note Acts 7:35-53.

III. Times of Trial are Testing for Break Through! (3: 12-19)

  • Testing / Tempting- qualified by who is participating.
    • See 1 Corinthians 10:9-13.
  • Israel was not able to enter the Promised Land (Physical Shadow of God’s Rest) because the majority in faith allowed the minority in unbelief to pursued them to put God to the test.
    • Note: Proverbs 12:26
    • Note: Romans 6:1-4 / 12-14
  • We must be mindful to hold fast (v.6) to Jesus by exhorting each other (v.13) to not turn back to sin (v.15).
  • The Church must take this seriously!
    • Note: 1 Timothy 5:17-25

Faith is believing God’s Spirit / the Bible; turning away from it is unbelief which can lead to a hardened heart.
