Belief- A Daily Pursuit of His Rest

February 17, 2019 Speaker: Damian Mericka Series: Humanity’s Only Hope

Topic: Belief- A Daily Pursuit of His Rest

Going deeper questions (Life Group)

  • What stood out to you about this message and why?
  • Why was there fear in the witness of the Spies? How did this influence the greater congregation of Israel?
  • Why did the people want to stone Joshua and Caleb? Have you found times where being around people on fire for God is annoying? Why is that?
  • Why is it important to make a daily effort to know and place faith in God? (Explain the Promise, Invitation and Encouragement to Joshua and its application to us)
  • How can we increase our faith to know more of God’s Rest in our present moments? What do you need prayer for right now- what is causing you to be afraid?

Message outline

Title: Belief- A Daily Pursuit of His Rest

Series: Hebrews: Humanity’s Only Hope

Text: Key Passage-> Hebrews 4:1-16

Main Idea: The More we TRUST God, the More we know His Rest

  1. Fear Fills the Void Unbelief Creates (Hebrews 4:1-5)
  • It is not enough to hear God’s Word and be a part of Church life- God’s rest can only be known and experienced when we believe His Word!
    • Unbelief cannot see God in the Circumstances
      • Note Numbers 13:25-14:12
        • Unbelief amongst the Leadership influenced the congregation
        • Faith cries out; unbelief picks up stones to silence them.
      • The Rest God offers is upon His finished work, as modeled in the story of Creation (See Genesis 2:2)
  1. An Urgent Appeal from God (Hebrews 4:6-7 / Psalm 95:7-8)
  • Every generation receives the invitation to place their faith in God’s Spoken Word!

III. We Must Make Faith Personal (Hebrews 4:8-13)

  • Joshua championed faith in his own life- and influenced his family to follow- but he could not choose faith for anyone else! (Hebrews 4: 8-10 / Note Joshua 1)
    • God’s Promise to Joshua (Vv.5-6)
    • God’s Invitation to Joshua (Vv.7-8)
    • God’s Encouragement to Joshua (V.9)
  • As Joshua leads by example, the congregation pledges to follow him and place faith in God this time! (Vv.16-18)
    • When we know & believe God’s Word it drives out fear from our hearts (Hebrews 4:11-13) bringing in God’s Rest here and now. (Note Joshua 2:11)
  1. Jesus Can Increase our Faith (Hebrews 4:14-16)
  • God abides around a finished work (rest); nothing happens outside of His Will. Jesus, as our High Priest abides in this finished work (rest).  As we pray and grow in His Word, our faith in Him increases allowing us to know His Rest in our present moments!

Note: Mark 9:24 / Luke 17:5
