Going deeper questions (Life Group)

  • What stood out to you about this message and why?
  • What does dull of hearing or sluggish mean in 5:11? How does it make you feel when someone isn’t trying to understand you? Are we ever this way with God?
  • What is the difference between teaching that nurtures versus dictates? How can we be more nurturing?
  • Did the author mean we could lose our salvation? Explain how we do not from this passage.
  • What kind of soil is your life? (6:7-8)

Message outline

Title:  Faith: Moving Forward in Jesus!

Series: Hebrews: Humanity’s Only Hope

Text: Key Passage-> Hebrews 5:11-6:12

Main Idea: Without Faith, Knowledge Does Nothing for Us!

  1. We Interrupt this Message: Third Warning (5:11-6:8)
  • Teaching that leads us to Jesus (5:11-14)
    • Sluggish. As the Pastor leads onward, he sees some slow down, pull back and fall out (5:11) Without faith, knowledge does nothing for us.
    • Neverland. The desire to grow up lessens as we do grow up- life is hard and we pull back (5:12-14). We reproduce what we know.
      • Note -> 1 Samuel 28:15-25 Knowledge that does not lead us to faith will leave us in misery.
    • The Hebrew audience had people who were learning, but not placing faith in Jesus Christ for salvation. However, the Pastor cannot cater to that margin, but must preach and teach that leads deeper into Christ!
    • The difference between teaching that nurtures maturity in Christ versus dictates.
      • Note -> Romans 2:1-11
    • Teaching that grows us in Jesus (6:1-8)
      • Transition from Law (Moses) into Grace (Jesus) 6:1-3:
        • Repentance -> Repentance unto Jesus
        • Faith -> Faith unto Jesus
        • Physical Cleansing -> Spiritual Cleansing
        • Laying on hands -> Jesus: Personal Savior
        • Resurrection -> God raised Jesus / will us
        • Judgment -> Eternal Presence / Absence
      • Grace cannot transition into Law; we cannot transform Jesus into us, but we must be transformed into Jesus. (6:4-6)
        • Note: John 16:8 / Acts 7:51 / Matthew 16:17
      • Faith in Jesus results in fruit. (6:7-8)
        • Note -> Matthew 13:1-23
  1. The Pastor’s Confidence (6:9-12)
  • Faith in Jesus will lead them to know the fruitful living found in Him! Note -> Philippians 1:6
