Christ- Our Safe Place!

January 12, 2020 Speaker: Damian Mericka Series: Joshua: Salvation Through Judgment

Topic: Christ- Our Safe Place!

Going deeper questions (Life Group)

  • What stood out to you about this message and why?
  • How did God redeem Levi for His Glory? From a vengeful son, he became a Tribe representing a safe place for people to run and take refuge in. What messes has God turned around in your own life?  How can you encourage others to bring their mess to God for redemption? (POINT I)
  • How many cities of refuge were there? What does “refuge” mean?  What is the Macro view found in Joshua? Who was the Avenger and where could the Avenger not go?  What happened if the perpetrator ventured outside of the City of Refuge and was found by the Avenger? Do you feel you are presently in God’s refuge?  Are you at peace with God right now, or is there something you feel yourself keeping one eye out for an avenger? (POINT II)
  • How is Christ our present refuge, or safe place? How is this refuge a state of being we can know and enjoy in every moment of every day? Do you have an actual safe place you can go to think, heal or just “be” in with Him? (POINT III)

Title: Christ- Our Safe Place!

Series: Joshua: Salvation Through Judgment

Text: Joshua 20 & 21

Main Idea: What We See & Do When We Focus on His Kingdom

  1. Inheritance for the Tribe of Levi (Joshua 21:1-45)
  • In suit, the Tribes needed encouragement to possess what was promised. In the time of National worship at Shiloh, Levi stands to request what was promised as their inheritance. (Vv.1-3)
  • Tribe of Levi receives 48 cities and pasture lands, along with the Cities of Refuge. (Vv.4-45)
    • Stepping up in their Anointing
      • Genesis 49:5-7 -> Exodus 28:1; 32:2-29
    • Resourced to fulfill their Anointing
      • Numbers 35:1-8
        • Deuteronomy 14:22-29

The Tribe of Levi stand as an example of how we can mess up our lives and yet God can redeem, turning everything around for His Glory. Dispersed, Levi would keep everyone’s lives interconnected in the greater narrative God is writing- His Good News!

Shared: At the Tabernacle / At the Dinner Table

  1. Cities of Refuge (Joshua 20:1-9)
  • The Lord reminds Joshua to identify the places of refuge (Vv1-6)
    • Macro View, Step-by-Step (Joshua 20:1-9)
      • Situation escalates, resulting in a death. (v.3)
      • Perpetrator flees to one of these cities, pleads his case to elders and is secured (refuge). (v.4)
      • Avenger pursues but is denied vengeance. (v.5)
      • Perpetrator stays until death of High Priest; then they return home. (v.6)
      • Six cities (3 West / 3 East of Jordan) were open to not just Israel, but all who reside with them (Vv.7-9)
    • Micro View (Numbers 35:1-34)
      • Note -> Genesis 4:1-16 Violation brings Avenger of Law broken. These cities were only place of safety.

  1. Christ, Our Safe Place
  • Jesus is our refuge from the curse of the Law, the Wrath of God against sin. There is no going back!
    • Note-> Hebrews 6:13-20
  • God and His Kingdom (through Jesus) are our present Refuge

Note -> 2 Corinthians 5:17 / Psalm 18:2
