“Prayer is the Essential Work of the People of God”

3/21/2021

We, as sinful humans, are motivated by a lot of different things.  Some are driven to help others, to heal them, assist them, to counsel or serve them in their times of need. Some are driven by greed, by lust, the desire for money, the love of power. Some are driven to achieve Gold Medals, World Championships, to start a business, to become a billionaire.

But what motives them? What spurs them on to do what they do? Some believe that they are here to help others. Some may believe that people are just a hindrance, or perhaps a means, for them to achieve their goal. For some, they want the attention, the fame, the recognition, to be #1, for the focus to be on me.

What drives people?  What motivates them?  It’s their values, because:

What we believe determines what we value, and what we value demonstrates how we live.

As Christians, what are our core Values? What motivates us to live a life to serve Christ and to glorify God?

CMA website – 7 Core Values  (see cmalliance.org)

Our Core Values:

Lost people matter to God. He wants them found.

Prayer is the primary work of God’s people.

Everything we have belongs to God. We are His stewards.

Knowing and obeying God’s Word is fundamental to all true success.

Completing the Great Commission will require the mobilization of every fully devoted disciple.

Without the Holy Spirit’s empowerment, we can accomplish nothing.

Achieving God’s purposes means taking faith-filled risks. This always involves change.

What we believe determines what we value, and what we value demonstrates how we live.

This morning, we’re going to look into that 2nd core Value:

Prayer is the primary work of God’s people.

Prayer is the essential work of the people of God.

“Essential”

For physical life:       air, water, food, clothing and shelter (heat, cold)

Essential = Absolutely necessary, required, utmost importance,

            You CANNOT survive without it

Primary = first, before anything else is done.

Eph 6:10-20

Why is prayer essential?

  1. Intimacy with God
    1. Makes God known to us
    2. Draws us closer to Him.
    3. Persistency (Lu 18 :1-8)
  2. Implements His Will
    1. He gave US dominion ( Gen 1:26-28)
    2. He chooses to work THROUGH us -- birthing (1 Ki 18:41-45)
    3. HIS will – prayer for removal vs. endurance (Lu 22:39-44)
  3. Impacts His Creation
    1. It impacts us, as we are molded into Christ-likeness.
    2. Answers to prayer

Going Deeper:

What are my personal core values?  How do they relate to those for the CMA?  Where do I need to adjust?

Is prayer primary – essential --  in my daily life? What does that look like?

Am I persistent in my prayer time? Am I praying for God’s will -- for removal of burdens, or endurance?

How has prayer changed me?
