August 8, 2021 Speaker: Damian Mericka Series: Galatians: Sons & Heirs in Christ

Topic: Galatians: Children of Freedom

Sermon Title: “Galatians: Children of Freedom

Sermon Series: Galatians: Sons and Heirs in Christ

Text: Galatians 4

Speaker:  Pastor Damian Mericka

  1. Introduction: What we will be; what we are (I John 3:2-3)
    1. Each generation of believers faces the challenge of holding on to faith. How can we hold on to God’s Promises when they seem very far away or absent all together?

  1. Trusting God’s Timing in all Things (Galatians 4:1-7)
    1. Paul continues to use the illustration of children growing with that of Abraham and his two sons, Ishmael, and Isaac. One born under bondage; one born in freedom. Appearance wise, which is which? (1)
    2. Faith is not only trusting God’s promises, but trusting His timing (2-4)
      1. After Babylonian Captivity
        1. Israel done with idols.
        2. Ezra compiled all writings to form the Scripture (Old Testament)
        3. Synagogues spread out with the people
        4. Alexander the Great conquered and united:
          1. In one Language- Greek
          2. From Greece to Rome, culture was united under Pax Romana
            • Freedom to travel on roads in safety
            • Freedom to propagate the Gospel
          3. In this setting, Jesus comes and brings His Kingdom continued by the Apostles and believers today!
        5. Adopted by God- Father, Son, and Spirit (5-7)

  • Trusting God’s Promises Amidst Uncertainty (Galatians 4:8-20)
    1. The uncertainty of acceptance and victory (8-11)
      1. Colossians 2:1-23. Our confidence must not be in what we have done but in who we are in Christ; faith in God’s promises in Jesus.
    2. The uncertainty of illness (12-15) Though Christ indeed is our Healer, illness and ultimately death will touch us all. When God’s heling promises seem absent, we can trust the Promise Giver to be working through our health issues.
      1. Romans 8:31-19. We are more than conquerors in Christ!
    3. The uncertainty of the future (16-20) Paul appeals in the paternal love of God toward them. (See Isaiah 5:4) While uncertain of the future Christ has in their lives, Paul does not give up laboring into them and interceding for them. (Think of Moses laboring and interceding on behalf of Israel throughout the Wilderness Journey).
      1. Psalm 51:12 -Restore the joy of Your Salvation to me.
      2. Revelation 2:4-5 -Remember and return to your First Love.

  1. Standing and Declaring the Freedom that is Ours! (Galatians 4:21-31)
    1. Abraham had the promise of God yet had not learned to trust God’s timing nor how to hold on to God’s promise in uncertain circumstances. Faith will always wait on, trust in, and obey God. When we take matters into our own hands, trying to force God’s hand (stealing from last week) we can make things worse. (21-29)
      1. Two Mothers
        1. Hagar -Covenant of Law bearing children for slavery; for the earthly city of Jerusalem.
        2. Sarah -Covenant of Promise bearing children in Freedom; for the heavenly city of Jerusalem (New Heaven & New Earth).
      2. Two Sons
        1. Ishmael -Child of bondage; will be greater in number and will persecute the children of Promise (Bully)
        2. Isaac -Child of freedom; will inherit the promise given to Abraham fulfilled in Christ.
      3. No matter what our circumstances are, we can trust the Promise Giver who is in control of all things, working all things in His timing. ( 30-31)
        1. As Hagar and Ishmael were cast out (servitude), we today can stand in declaration in Jesus’ Name and cast out what is not ours in Christ (sin, legalism, empty ritual, the work of the enemy / defeated kingdom, etc)

  1. As we wait in Faith on the Promise Giver
    1. Ephesians 2:1-10. His Kingdom Come! As His Children, we are seated with Christ in Heavenly Places to unleash His Will into the World.
    2. Matthew 16:13-19. His Will be done! As His Children, we have the authority to both declare and demonstrate the ultimate power in Jesus’ Name. Let us be about His work in faithfulness toward the Father, in the Son, through the Spirit, who has adopted and made us His own in Freedom!
